Book Review "Chronology of Art"
The assumptions of the "Chronology of Art" are characterized by the process of changes taking place in art from the nineteenth century to the present day. In this short period of time, it is clearly visible how the outside world influences artists and how it determines (although it should be taken into account whether this is the most appropriate word) their creativity. The development of civilization, the formation of the concept of statehood, the invention of photography, the appearance of steam engines and, finally, in the 20th century, two terrible wars and the emergence of a consumer society, among other things, seem to be expressed in the following: in painting: revolutions inspire artists (for example, Delacroix, who in his works is most relevant to current topics) traveling by train became an important theme of painting (for example, in the case of the French Impressionists), photography led to a revolution in the art world, the war contributed to the emergence of many new trends, and the subsequent consumer lifestyle, the process of enriching society and globalization led to the formation of pop art, the main representative of which was Andy Warhol.
This obvious dependence, indicated by the authors of the book, not only by pointing out the relationship between the event and the work, but also by launching a timeline (which began thirty thousand years before our era, ending in 2017 with the beginning of Brexit) and the constant delineation of the historical and cultural background makes the reader seem transparent about all changes in culture. Although it is generally believed that, for example, abstract painting or minimalism remain excessively difficult to understand and interpret (some, perhaps those who visit galleries and museums less often, completely deprive these currents of the right to the content of any meaning), an attempt to understand abstract works, but not only those that "classify" through the prism of the realities in which their creators lived completely denies the truth of this judgment.
Culture, as the authors of the Chronology of Art seem to say, should be read and perceived not as an unreal, separate, exclusively autotelic being, but as a reflection of our reality, which is not always harmonious, light and transparent. Joseph Brodsky, the Russian Nobel Prize laureate, stated in one of his speeches that a nation that does not understand its poets is doomed; although I would not go so far in determination, I would expand the quoted thought by adding to it the problem of misunderstanding art, under which there is actually a misunderstanding of its own history. And how it ends, Pittacus Lohr eloquently said in his book "I am number Four", writing: Anyone who does not understand history is doomed to repeat it."
